Local attorney Patti Taylor is unofficially acting as the family’s spokesperson and says first and foremost, the family wants Richard Riedel of Mentone to know they do not hold him responsible and are also hurting for him. Kurt’s parents are Joshua and Dawn Engler. Joshua is a full-time firefighter for Warsaw and was on duty the night of his son’s accident.
“Kurt was a little Evel Knievel. We, the family, are so sorry for (Mr. Riedel) and we want him to know we do not blame him in the least,” she said. Taylor noted anyone with information on how to contact Riedel is asked to call her at 574-269-9991. “I know (Kurt’s) grandpa would really like to reach out to him,” she added.
The Kurt Engler Memorial Fund has been established through the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church where the Engler family attends. Donations and contributions may be made out to the church with “Kurt Engler Memorial Fund” written on the memo line.
