Syracuse Parks Department will host the second annual Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Syracuse Community Center, 1013 N. Long Drive. The event is open and free to the public. If there is rain the event will be held inside the community center.

There will be static displays of fire trucks, ambulance and police car.

The Syracuse Police Department will offer fingerprinting, identification kits and Scruff McGruff will be present. Turkey Creek Fire Department will bring a smokehouse and fire safety.

Representatives from the Indiana State Police will bring a K-9 unit and do a presentation on drug awareness. The Department of Natural Resources will have a display on boating safety.

Kosciusko County Safe Kids and Elkhart County Safe Kids Coalition will perform car seat inspections. The Kosciusko County Red Cross will do life preserver demonstrations and provide disaster education.

Personal Safety Unlimited, based in Warsaw, will offer a kid escape program.

Lakeland Youth Center will offer an obstacle course for kids.

As an extension to Safety Day, Personal Safety Unlimited will offer a self-defense course for men, women and children ages 13 and older from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Syracuse Community Center. Participants will learn to recognize the warning signs of attack; how to avoid threatening situations before they become dangerous; how to avoid attackers by not looking like a victim; and how to use the power of their voices and body language to prevent an attack. Most confrontations and assaults can be stopped by a strong voice, good eye contact and body carriage.

They will also learn how to protect themselves and their loved ones by using simple and effective full force techniques to the attacker’s vulnerable areas.

Pre-registration is required, and space is limited to 10 participants. Cost of the class is $40.

For more information about Safety Day or the self defense class, call the Syracuse Parks Department at 574-457-3440.
