As lingering snow finishes melting and rainfall begins draining into local waterways, some in the county are preparing for possible flooding in low lying areas.
Though the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Kosciusko County due to the threat of flooding, according to Kosciusko Emergency Management Director Ed Rock, the flood situation in the county is not a problem.
“Flooding is not that bad yet,” stated Rock. “Our levels will continue to come up as soon as the water out in the fields drains out into the waterways. Middle of the weekend we will be out distributing sandbags. We are prepared for it, it is just a matter of when it will hit. I’m not anticipating it being terrible. We will have some low lying areas that will flood though.”
Rock noted those concerned about flooding are welcomed and encouraged to pick up sandbags at the Kosciusko County Highway Department in Warsaw. Sand and bags are available, but residents should bring their own shovels as they must fill their own bags.
In addition to flood concerns, Rock warned motorists to be very careful about driving on roads with any moving water.
“Were calling for another inch, or not quite an inch, of rain on Monday. Do not drive through the flowing water on the roadway. Especially with roads the way they are right now, they are extremely soft and they can get washed out really quick,” cautioned Rock. “You will not be able to see that the roads are washed out so take extreme caution.”
