The Warsaw Community School Board was asked last month by two citizens to install handrails in the Tiger Den to make accessibility easier for some of the older sports fans. On Monday, March 24, WCS Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz announced that the board had agreed to install handrails in the lower levels of the Tiger Den.
“At the last school board meeting, two community patrons addressed the board requesting that handrails be installed on the bleachers in the Tiger Den,” stated Hintz. “We have investigated the request and have determined to move forward with the installation of handrails on the lower level bleachers in the Tiger Den. We appreciate this concern and request from supporters of Tiger basketball.”
According to Carolyn Wulliman, the handrails will be an asset to the numerous long-term ticket holders who have difficulty navigating the bleachers. Wulliman presented the board with a petition last month of 167 signatures garnered during a Tuesday Basketball game. She noted that many other schools have installed handrails.
Dave Anson, athletic director for WCS, the installation of the handrails is still in the planning stages. Anson stated though it would be great to have the handrails in by graduation, it is unlikely that the process will occur that quickly. Instead, he noted the rails would be installed as soon as possible and will be done in an “appropriate and safe manner.” Anson noted the school corporation must first look at how invasive the project will be as well as select a company to purchase the rails from.
