There is something for everyone at Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation’s annual Lake Talk & Eats on the first Saturday of June, July, and August, at the WACF Levinson-LaBrosse Education Center, 11586 N SR 13, Syracuse.
Join the WACF and special guests to discuss important issues facing the lakes and watershed and take part in hands-on activities to discover how to help preserve and protect the lakes. Everyone is invited and an informal breakfast is served. The programs are from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and are free of charge.
Native Plants & Healthy Shorelines is the topic for Saturday, June 6. Martha Ferguson, Riverview Nursery, will explain the importance of using native plants in your landscaping and on shorelines. WACF will demonstrate how to use native plants along shorelines and how to plant a rain garden. There will representatives of local nurseries with a variety of native plants available for purchase.
WACF Annual Water Bug Catch Sturday, July 4. One of the most popular events of the summer. Nancy Brown, certified Hoosier Riverwatch trainer, will lead kids, parents and grandparents into the water to locate and identify water critters and learn why they are so important to water quality. This is the morning your kids will talk about all year long.
Invasive/Exotic Species is the topic for the final Talks & Eats Saturday, Aug. 1. Invasive/exotic species are affecting the water quality and land/soil conditions. Invasive species include zebra mussels, Asian carp, Starry Stonewort, mute swans and more. Experts will discuss the invasion, resulting economic and visual damage and how individuals can fight back. Persons can contribute to protecting the lakes and water by learning the signs, reporting sightings and taking precautions.
