Nick Kelley, owner of Chimp’s Comix, displays some of the titles to be distributed during Free Comic Book Day on Saturday.
Fanboys and girls throughout Kosciusko are rejoicing as the comic book Christmas rolls back into town this weekend. This weekend, Chimp’s Comix, located at 919 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, will be celebrating National Free Comic Book Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
According to owner Nick Kelley, the event will offer a taste of comics for both those new to comics as well as avid fans. Comics targeted at young and old alike will offer a diverse blend of choices for those visiting the store. Each guest will be given two free comics, compliments of Kelley and the store.
However, for the fee of a canned good or non-perishable food item, fans are able to obtain additional comics per each item donated. These items will then be distributed to the Salvation Army to feed hungry individuals within Kosciusko County. Kelley noted that a total of 841 items were brought in for donation to the store last year and stated the event draws over 200 customers each year. Please note, though donations do allow you to obtain additional comics, one of each comic is the limit per customer.
When asked if the event draws in new fans, Kelley stated, “That is definitely the intent. The event is marketed at new readers or older readers who haven’t read in awhile. The comics usually start at a good entry point for readers.”
Kelley invited guest to feel free to dress up in costumes to help celebrate the day. Numerous sales will also be featured at Chimp’s, including 35 percent off back issues, 35 percent off signed comics and 25 percent off graphic novels. Kelley noted the store has been celebrating the event for over 10 years, adopting the “holiday” just after its creation.
Kelley revealed a few highlights of the giveaway will be DC’s Divergence, Teen Titans Go, a new Avengers book featuring a new team, a special preview for Secret Wars with the release of Secret Wars #0. These comics serve as a preview for the future of Marvel comics. Secret Wars #1 is slated to release this Wednesday.
All ages comics, which Kelley noted tend to be popular, include comics based on Transformers, Rabbids, Spongebob, Pokemon as well as a Sonic and Megaman flip book.
