The U.S. Postal Service will continue making Saturday home deliveries for another year.

Congress passed a government spending resolution last week that includes a mandate for six-day mail service. It was signed into law by President Obama. The provision extends to the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2015.

The resolution did not include postal reform, despite efforts by several senators. Sens. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.; John Tester, D-Mont.; Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.; and Bernard Sanders, D-Vt. had attempted to broker a bill in favor of universal service, emphasizing the needs of rural areas and calling to resume mail sorting to across all communities, rather than its current concentration in large cities, where mail volume is declining.
