During last night’s Warsaw Community School Board Meeting, the school board was presented with a review of the 2014 summer school attendance and improvement rates. Courses included preschool to high school age students in courses including Kindergarten Countdown, Reading Readiness, IREAD Literacy Program, STEM Program, High School Credit classes for Acceleration, High School Credit Recovery, Drivers Training and enrichment camps.
Kyle Carter, newly-appointed principal of Jefferson Elementary, presented information regarding Kindergarten Countdown to the board. The program, which acts as a transition for children not yet ready for kindergarten, is funded entirely by the United Way. This year the course had a total of 48 to 49 on the roster with 44 regular attendees. Carter noted that the course showed marked growth with pupils in counting and recognition of colors, numbers, letters, sounds and more.
Carter also discussed the summer Reading Readiness program noting that a total of 321 students participated. That program allows for growth and learning in literacy and requires instructors to teach in a way different than during the school year in accordance to IREAD testing. Carter stated those who attended with a near perfect attendance, almost all showed marked growth.
In addition to the Reading Readiness Program and Kindergarten countdown, Edgewood Middle School Principal Joella Smith presented information to the board on the literacy program for grades 4-7, a new STEM Enrichment Program. A total of 49 students participated in the STEM Enrichment program with an attendance rate of 87.38 percent. The program explored electrical engineering, computer sciences and biomedical engineering.
The board heard information on high school summer courses, which had a total of 641 students in summer session one credit classes and 426 students in summer session two credit classes. Students were also able to participate in a summer enrichment camp as well as courses at Ivy Tech and Science Central.
Both Smith and Carter thanked the board for their continued investment in summer programming and noted the importance it plays in many student’s lives throughout the school year.
