A Warsaw woman escaped serious injury Sunday afternoon when her vehicle was hit on U.S. 31 in Miami County.
Megan Burns, 33, was traveling north on U.S. 31 near Peru when a southbound 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Floyd Smith, 17, of Kokomo, crossed the median of the highway and struck her 2013 Ford Edge. The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m.
Officers from the Indiana State Police, the Peru Police Department, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Department responded to the two vehicle crash, which severely injured Smith and a passenger in his car, Terra Hildebrand, 22, of Logansport. Both were both airlifted from the scene to a Fort Wayne hospital. Hildebrand reportedly sustained life threatening injuries. Smith was also flown from the scene with undetermined injuries. Burns suffered lacerations in the crash.
The preliminary crash investigation was conducted by Indiana State Police Trooper Ezariah Bricknell. At this time, police say alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor, but officers allegedly found approximately 20 grams of marijuana and an unidentified powdered substance in the Impala.
The accident remains under investigation.
