A water boil alert was issued to the Lake Wawasee area around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, but has been resolved as of this morning.
It is standard procedure to issue an alert to residents on Lake Wawasee in the event of a water leak that has the potential of contaminating the drinking water, according to Tim Woodward of the Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District.
Wednesday’s main water break was caused by a fire hydrant, located within the lake area, that burst. The water pressure in local homes immediately began to drop, and the water was deemed unsafe for eating or drinking.
Residents were given a notice that said they could still use the water for recreational uses, such as bathing. They were still able to use the water for consumption, as long as they boiled it first to make it safe.
The Turkey Creek Sewer District was sent to resolve the issue, and began taking samples of the water for testing on Wednesday. Their team tested the water until they concluded that it was safe for use once again.
Woodward said that this is a rare occurrence, but usually doesn’t take more than 48 hours to fix. “In my 25 years on the job, we’ve had to do this maybe twice,” he commented.
