UPDATE: Warsaw Police Department Lt. Kip Shuter said today that officers are investigating what appears to be a tragic accident at Canterbury House Apartments.

According to Shuter, a male subject, who told police he was in the shower when he heard a scream, went to investigate. He found 2-year-old Mya Pearson laying on the ground below the second-story balcony of his apartment. Police say the balcony door was not locked and “it appears that (the child) moved a chair to the railing and stood up on it and fell over the railing. It is being investigated as an accident at this point,” said Lt. Shuter.

Child Protective Services were notified.

Family members tell StaceyPageOnline.com that the child suffered a skull fracture and is in Lutheran Hospital, but is expected to recover.

BREAKING: At approximately 7 p.m. tonight, a 2-year-old girl fell from a second story balcony at Canterbury House Apartments and is reportedly in critical condition in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

The child, identified by a neighbor who witnessed the fall, is Mya Pearson. According to the woman, who asked not to be identified, the toddler was with several children playing on the balcony. “The little girl was standing on a chair and slipped and fell over the edge,” said the neighbor, who described a horrific scene.

The woman who saw the accident said, the last report given to neighbors by the apartment manager and the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, was that the toddler was unresponsive with massive head and neck injuries.

Officers of the Warsaw Police Department are investigating the incident. They were assisted on scene by firefighters of the Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Territory and Multi-Township EMS.
