Indiana State Police say the driver of a Wawasee Community School bus ran a red light causing this morning’s crash with a dump truck in Marshall County.

The report, provided by ISP, indicates Patricia Myers, 59, of Syracuse, was driving the school bus westbound on U.S. 30 and failed to notice the red light, pulling into the path of a dump truck, driven by Scott Morrison, 57, of Ora, Ind., that was eastbound on U.S. 30 attempting to turn left onto King Road.

Originally, no injuries were reported, but Joy Goshert of Wawasee Community Schools later said five students were transported to the Plymouth hospital to be examined for minor injuries. Myers was also transported to the hospital for arm pain, but was released shortly after.

Goshert said two Wawasee buses with nearly 100 Wawasee Middle School students total were en route to a water park for a field trip. The trip was an incentive reward for students who worked all year on positive behavior.

The second bus returning to the school, as the water park trip was cancelled for today. A second bus was sent to the scene to pick up the other students and return them to the school as well. Goshert said the school was in the process of calling all of the students parents shortly after the crash, but with nearly 100 students, it did take some time.

The crash happened at 10:08 a.m. on the east side of Plymouth.
