A fire in downtown South Bend is being blamed on mail delivery interruptions locally.
According to WSBT-TV, an underground vault caught fire around midnight last night. The fire has caused power outages in most of downtown South Bend and AEP is estimating it could be as late as Sunday evening before all power is restored.
The result of the outage is affecting local mail, including customers of The Papers Inc. who subscribe to The Mail-Journal. The papers are mailed through the South Bend Post Office, which is among the masses in South Bend that is without power.
WSBT reports the AEP shut down 4 of the city’s 5 circuits for the safety of those battling the blaze and the general public.
